Hurricane season brings strong winds, heavy rains, and unpredictable conditions—things that don’t mix well with an RV. Unlike a house, your RV is mobile, lightweight, and more vulnerable to storm damage. But with the right preparation, you can keep your RV (and your family) safe before, during, and after the storm.

Here’s your complete hurricane prep checklist:
1. Review Your Insurance
Before storm season begins, ensure your RV insurance covers wind, flood, and storm damage. Keep your policy number and agent’s contact info handy.
2. Store Documents Safely
Keep your registration, insurance, medical information, and IDs in a waterproof folder or store digital copies online.
3. Build a Go-Bag
Pack essentials: flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, phone chargers, medications, and cash.
4. Stock Food & Water
Have at least 3–5 days of bottled water and non-perishable food stored.
5. Fuel & Propane
Keep your fuel tank full and propane bottles topped off before the storm.
6. Dump & Fill Tanks
Empty your black and gray tanks, and fill your fresh water tank in case utilities are disrupted.
7. Secure Outdoor Items
Bring in chairs, grills, awnings, and anything that could become a flying hazard.
8. Retract Awnings & Slides
Keep them pulled in—high winds can shred awnings or damage slide mechanisms.
9. Reinforce Windows & Vents
Use storm shutters, plywood, or even heavy-duty tape to protect vulnerable areas.
10. Choose High Ground
If possible, move your RV to higher ground away from flood zones, rivers, or low-lying coastal areas.
11. Face Into the Wind
Park your RV with the nose facing the wind for maximum stability.
12. Stabilize & Chock Wheels
Use leveling jacks, stabilizers, and wheel chocks to keep your RV grounded.
13. Follow Evacuation Orders
If local authorities issue an evacuation order, don’t risk it—relocate inland. Your RV’s mobility is an advantage.
14. Inspect After the Storm
Check your roof, windows, and seams for leaks or damage before hitting the road.
15. Document Damage
Take photos for insurance claims right away. Even minor damage should be recorded.
Bottom Line: Hurricanes are unpredictable, but preparation isn’t. A little planning now can save your RV, your belongings, and your peace of mind when storms roll in.
